MCRI Demonstration Project Monitoring
Project Year:
2016
Project Budget:$64,500
WCQI Grant:$15,000
Organization:Mission Creek Restoration Initiative (MCRI)
Project Description:
Mission Creek is the largest tributary entering Okanagan Lake, and by restoring habitat values in this creek, there will be significant ecosystem, recreational, economic and social contributions on a lake wide basis. Increased fish production resulting from this restoration will enhance the recreational fishery which is a major economic driver throughout the Okanagan. In addition, the contributions to the ecosystem and associated social values will be wide ranging.
This monitoring project has been a key component of the MCRI Demonstration Project, ensuring the benefits described above are quantified which will help to build support from government decision makers and funding sources for future restoration efforts in the valley.
This project focused on 3 activities: flood protection monitoring, fish habitat suitability assessments, and outreach and communications. As specified in the Effectiveness Monitoring Plan, these activities require multiple year implementation to ensure objectives are successfully addressed.
