Duteau Creek Watershed – Cattle Impact Reduction Plan
Project Year:
2008
Project Budget:$20,000
WCQI Grant:$20,000
Organization:Greater Vernon Water
Project Description:
The Duteau Creek Community Watershed, one of Greater Vernon Water’s (GVW) main water sources, resides on Crown land – a multi-use asset that provides lands for range, forestry, mining, and recreation. GVW initiated a Watershed Assessment and Protection Plan for the Duteau Creek watershed in 2007, and one observation was the impact by cattle around some streams. A steering committee was formed of licensees, stakeholders and other land users in the watershed and existing maps were reviewed to identify the locations of fences, cattle guards and watering features. A field inventory was conducted to confirm and GPS structure locations and note details such as condition, maintenance requirements, timber type, and forest health concerns. Opportunities for range improvements were looked into and a tenure process was developed and works completed. A maintenance program was also developed and implemented. This project shows that cooperation with provincial ministries, stakeholders and other land users in the Duteau Creek Watershed can help in protecting this important resource - Water. cattleimpactreductionplan_duteau.pdf
