Rewatering of Quintal and Winter Oxbows
Project Year:
2008
Project Budget:$70,000
WCQI Grant:$14,000
Organization:Osoyoos Oxbows Restoration Society
Project Description:
The intention of the project was to demonstrate that water quality could be improved in the Okanagan River by diverting water back into oxbows adjacent to the river channel. It was believed that the heavy silt loads and the generally elevated levels of phosphorous the river is carrying at certain times of the year were causing more rapid nutrient-loading of Osoyoos Lake than is desirable. By reconnecting the oxbows to the river channel it may be possible to reduce silt and phosphorous levels entering Osoyoos Lake.
