Source Water Protection Planning – Mill Creek
Project Year:
2008
Project Budget:$24,631
WCQI Grant:$22,000
Organization:Glenmore Ellison Improvement District
Project Description:
The intent of this project was to gain a greater understanding of the risk factors to the Mill Creek water source that may exist as a result of the variety of land uses in the watershed upstream of the GElD intake with consideration of the short to medium term potential risks associated with the effects of the Mountain Pine Beetle. The final plan is also intended to address the Interior Health Authority condition on the GElD Operating Permit that requires a Source Protection Plan for its source areas.Previous watershed reports and GIS data were compiled and summarized to confirm the water source area with fieldwork being conducted where necessary. This information was used to identify locations in the watershed that may be affected by contaminants, then ground based assessments were completed to rate the degree of contamination or potential contamination to the surface water. Next, the drinking water protection barriers were evaluated and the risks identified earlier were assessed to identify and prioritize problem/potential problem locations. Finally, the risks were summarized and actions were suggested that would reduce the risks to drinking water quality.
